Why Primary Care needs EHR?

February 10, 2021 - Parul Saini, Webmedy Team

EHR software collects, records, and maintains patient data. Data includes patient demographics information, medical history, diagnoses, medications, prescriptions, allergy lists, documents, and lab results. The goal of an EHR is to organize patient data, creating it simpler for healthcare staff to evaluate a patient's record before or while their visit.

With the old method of physical file folders, you could simply have health records scattered across various doctor's offices. If you were to go to a new physician, data would need to be copied and sent or faxed to your new physician to give him full knowledge of your health. You can see how many possible difficulties could come up with this - a patient not remembering their past visit information, missing or incomplete records, and hard-to-read handwriting - the list continues.

Electronic Medical Records software (EMR) or Electronic Health Records (EHR) software makes it easy to run daily processes smoothly for healthcare organizations.

Primary care practices and physicians have their unique requirements and difficulties and hence they need software that is adjustable, powerful, functional, and adaptable. A primary care EMR software supports the running of family practices and clinics by assuring that the medical and administrative workflows are streamlined and records are maintained.

Why primary care must have EHRs software?

  • Increase in Productivity

Electronic health records help primary care practice by maintaining records digitally, allowing physicians to keep track of patient health and information like demographics, past medical history, prescriptions, etc. Primary care practices use Electronic Health Records to maximize their productivity so they can concentrate on quality care and improve health outcomes.

  • Providing Better Care

EHR benefits include improvements in saving and retrieval of patient information; use of higher-level functions resulted in improvements to chronic disease management and preventive service delivery.

E-prescription management in EHR software helps to give better post-visit care and the patient portal platform aids online scheduling and payments making patients happier and feel more engaged in their care journey.

  • Helps in Personalized Care

Functionality in EHR like Patient history helps physicians to maintain a correct and detailed history of patient interactions which provides more personalized care.

  • Helps you with Billing

Primary care also has a financial side that needs to be automated, the automatic billing and claim tracking tools in the EMR software system automates end to end billing procedures and streamlines the tracking of various claims. Once the financial processes are running smoothly practices can get paid faster.

  • Better Teamwork and Coordination

EHRs facilitate primary care teamwork and coordination by (1) enhanced communication and (2) redefined team roles/improved delegation. While professionals emphasize the significance of face to face communication, they believe EHRs enhance communication within the practice team via enhanced access to patient information for all team members, instant messaging, within-chart notes, phone templates that could be routed to team members' inboxes, and task assignments.

  • Redefined Team Roles and Task Assignment

The fusion of revised clinical workflow with EHR enables primary care physicians to consider enhanced roles within the care team, freeing physicians to concentrate on more complex aspects of care. EHRs support easier task delegation and help avoid task duplication. Task manager software (when part of the EHR) and message distribution from the patient portal to providers' in-boxes are examples of how EHRs allowed such delegation.

Choosing an EHR

As a primary care physician, you should keep in mind the ability of integration possibilities offered by the software vendor. A primary care software should give seamless integration with EMR software of the Practice Management (PM) software system. You also need to consider the software options offered by vendors which include cloud-based and on-premise software solutions. Cloud-based solutions are a better option for your practice as of now since it needs lower upfront costs and once the software is smoothly running you require little assistance from IT, staff members.

Summary

EHR software systems have given an opportunity for primary care providers to operate more efficiently than in the past. The software features and tools automate and streamline day to day clinical, financial, and administrative tasks which lets practices see more patients and provide better care. Primary care providers are the pillar in the healthcare system and are often overburdened so good EHR software should be easy to use, automatic, and reliable facilitating seamless communication between physicians involved in the healthcare system.
