Diabetes can be controlled effectively with the help of lifestyle and dietary changes. There are a variety of foods that you can incorporate into your diet to maintain your blood sugar levels and overcome complications or health risks associated with diabetes. Ayurveda is emerging as a very popular and accepted science for healing one's body using natural ways. Ayurveda focuses on foods that create balance within the body. An essential component of Ayurveda is spices.
This spice is a staple in every Indian kitchen. Turmeric has been used for many years to cure infections, fight diseases and eradicate skin issues. Turmeric has antibacterial properties. It strengthens immunity and is anti-inflammatory. It contains antioxidants that promote heart health and helps in weight management which is extremely important for diabetics. Turmeric contains curcumin which can help in keeping blood sugar in check. Just cook your food and vegetables with a spoonful of turmeric and reap its benefits.
Cinnamon, a flavourful spice, contains bioactive compounds that help to lower blood sugar levels. Powdered cinnamon also regulates insulin activity in the body to keep its level under control. Cinnamon can be included in your diet by adding a pinch of powder to your daily meals. You can also consume it by mixing half a teaspoon with warm water, every morning.
Cumin is another great spice that can easily be included in the diet to fight diabetes. Cumin is very effective in managing blood sugar levels. It also helps you maintain a healthy heart. To get a concentrated form, roast a teaspoon of cumin seeds until brown and then grind it to convert it into a powder. Have a pinch with a cup of lukewarm water every day to reap its benefits.
Ginger has anti-diabetic, hypolipidemic, and anti-oxidative properties which are beneficial in controlling blood sugar levels. Ginger also can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce oxidation stress and improve cholesterol levels. Ginger even helps with weight loss.
A study published found that daily consumption of three 1-gram capsules of ginger powder for 8 weeks proved useful for patients with Type 2 diabetes. Drink 2 to 3 cups of ginger tea daily or include fresh or dry ginger in your cooking.
Cloves are rich in antioxidants and reduce inflammation in the body. Cloves are highly aromatic, loaded with iron and calcium, and added to many Indian dishes to enhance flavor. Cloves can naturally reduce the sugar levels in the body. You can eat 1-2 cloves directly, or add a pinch of clove powder to your tea or dishes.
Fenugreek is an herb that diabetic people should include in their diets. Due to its hypoglycemic activity, it can improve glucose tolerance and lower blood sugar levels. In addition, its fiber content slows down the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars.
Cayenne pepper is known to increase the body's metabolism and helps to burn fat. Since obesity can be a constant problem with diabetic patients, Cayenne pepper can be helpful. It also helps to reduce inflammation in the body. Sprinkle a pinch on your meals to enjoy a spicy, anti-diabetic meal.
